Lemons were smoked, milk was intentionally curdled and the cocktails got funky at Mixtapes & Mixology on July 9. The event, sponsored by Pierre Ferrand, was jointly held by The Recommended Daily and The Paris of the Plains Cocktail Festival at The Kill Devil Club. It brought together 12 mixologists, who each created a cocktail based on a track of their choosing from a local band [the recipes and pairings are here, if you’re curious].
The bartenders got on stage to explain their drink’s inspiration as attendees sipped tasters and listened to the track that served as inspiration. The crowd’s favorite was The American’s Paige Unger. The winner of the evening’s golden microphone (as decided by RD and the PopFest crew) was Justus Drugstore’s Zac Snyder. [You can hear Snyder and Port Fonda’s Caitlin Corcoran talk about the event on an episode from last week’s KCUR’s Central Standard]. The night culminated with a live performance by Loaded Goat. Photojournalist Julie Denesha captured the scene at Mixtapes & Mixology — a slideshow of her shots are below.

The Rieger’s Jenn Tosatto carries a tray of her ‘Sweeney’s Pride,’ based on a track from The Late Night Callers.
