Heart of America Hot Dog Festival & other weekend possibilities

The Heart of America Hot Dog Festival, presented by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, returns Saturday from 12 to 9 p.m. on Buck O’Neil Way (17th Street Terrace). There will be live music, Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for kids, which includes admission to the museum. You can also get a Big Dog package for $60 that includes a t-shirt and unlimited hot dogs and Pepsi products.

It’s time you got farm knowledge and corn dogs — that’s why we live here through the sweatbox known as summer. The Johnson County Fair runs today through Saturday in Gardner, Kansas. You can attend a goat milk demonstration (6:30 p.m.) or witness the Barnyard Olympics (8 p.m.) tonight. They’ll hold the same goat milking demonstration tomorrow, along with a carnival and demolition derby (7 p.m.).

The Cinder Block Brewery (110 E 18th Avenue, North Kansas City) will debut its new patio with a grand opening at 8 p.m. tonight. Screenland Armour will be screening the new television show, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.

Park Place is hosting a Paint the Night Street Fair from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday with live music, a fashion show, celebrity impersonators and plenty of vittles. 801 Chophouse will have smoked prime brisket sliders, Pig & Finch will have an espresso rubbed pork shoulder and Ingredient True Eatery will have a Buffalo Bill burger (a blend of short rib, bison and brisket).

Wish you were more crafty? Don’t fret. You can rely on the creativity of others at The Strawberry Swing Indie Craft Fair’s 5th Summer Swing is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Alexander Majors Barn (8201 State Line Road). It’s crafts and food trucks like Coffee Cake KC.

The Rhythm and Brews Microbrew Fest is Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. in Manhattan, Kansas. Tickets are $25 and that includes a commemorative tasting glass. Try brews from Big John’s, Little Apple, Tallgrass and Radius Brewing Co. Recommended Daily contributor Pete Dulin will be there signing copies of his book, the KC Ale Trail. There’s an attached music festival that kicks off at 5 p.m.

The Pitch is holding the City Market Beer Festival Saturday. Go here to see a list of what will be available. It’s a free beer fest (you pay for what you drink) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
