Grinders at Stonewall (10244 Pflumm) is set to open next Tuesday at the site of the former Stonewall Inn in Lenexa. Back in June, The Recommended Daily sat down with owner STRETCH (Jeff Rumaner) to talk about the new restaurant, which has a custom fabricated metal tap system for 27 of the 30 beers that will be on tap, a community table on wheels built with reclaimed bowling alley wood, and plans to ‘Toast the Ghost,’ (a bar special to acknowledge the possibility that the space is haunted) nightly at 9 p.m.
Grinders at Stonewall will share a number of menu items (think wings, pizza and cheesesteaks) with Stretch’s downtown locations, Grinders and Grinders West, but will also have its own twists — the Mixon (a barbecue brisket sandwich) and Piggy Morgan (a basket of pulled pork sliders topped with a mango tri-color slaw on pretzel buns).
In addition to a custom bar — featuring a ceiling of intertwined road signs — Grinders at Stonewall also has an outdoor patio, fire pit and dog park. After rehabbing the former Stonewall Inn — a project that began in 2012 — Stretch is hoping to add a detached coffee shop and bakery, as well as an herb garden on the 2.1 acre property in the future.
The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to midnight (or later) on Saturday and Sunday. The phone number is 913-888-2000.
