Forget the champagne toast. If you really want to celebrate Sporting Kansas City’s 2013 MLS Cup victory, you’ll have to pick up a bottle of Sporting Kansas City Championship Ale. The Boulevard Brewing Co. is honoring the local soccer side with a Smokestack Series release slated to be out in mid-June.
As for the beer, Boulevard describes it as ” a crisp, refreshing Saison-style ale, featuring late hopping with Mandarina Bavaria, a new German hop with distinct tangerine and citrus flavors.” It weighs in at 6.2% ABV. Boulevard says this will be a limited, one-off release in its Smokestack Series. They plan to distribute approximately 2,000 cases of 750ml bottles in the Kansas City area.
Boulevard and Sporting have a history of shared innovation — the Kansas City brewery launched its beer backpacks at Sporting Park (the system that allows beer vendors to pour drafts in stands is also at Kauffman Stadium). If you’re looking to pair the Championship Ale with something to eat, I’d recommend picking up some Green Dirt Farm cheese, a dish of pad thai (or anything with chili paste) from the Vietnam Cafe or a charcuterie plate from Bridger’s Bottle Shop.
