The Big Chill & other weekend possibilities

weekend-02116The only way to survive winter is with heaping quantities of chili and strong beer. Get both at The Big Chill — a celebration of those two winter warmers on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at 75th Street Brewery (520 W 75th Street). Tickets are $35 and that includes chili and beers from 12 area breweries. Just a note, this one is outside in the heated beer garden.

Rye (10551 Mission Road, Leawood) is hosting a Cookies & Beer pairing event ($40) on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. It’s a pairing of five cookies and five beers, along with a signed copy of the Cookies & Beer cookbook.

Village Square Coworking Studio (4436 State Line Road) is hosting a Second Friday games night tonight. They’ll have snacks and you bring a six-pack of beer that goes into a beer potluck cooler with ice. Things kick off at 4:30 p.m.

The Standard Pour (1511 Westport Road) is offering a four-course prix fixe dinner ($45) on Saturday and Sunday. Each course from pear parsnip bisque to field greens with seared scallop and fennel-pear kiwi vinaigrette includes a wine pairing. [Full menu here.] Reservations are requested.

The Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council (3700 Woodland Avenue) is hosting an Aquaponics 101 workshop with Kansas City Aquaponics on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Learn how to build a small, sustainable system. It’s $10 to attend (or $15 for two people).

There’s a Chocolate Walk in Independence Square Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Participating retailers will be handing out free chocolate. Just look for a balloon in front of a store, that signifies free chocolate inside.

Everybody likes to Kiss and Tail. Learn about the mating habits of animals (settle down, you animals) at the Kansas City Zoo with Kiss and Tail on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Actors from the Living Room Theatre will be performing the courteship rituals of various members of the animal kingdom. Tickets are $45 ($35 for Friends of the Zoo) and include hors d’oeuvres and live music.

The Fahrenheit Valentine Ball is Sunday from 7 p.m. to midnight at Sasha’s Bakery (105 W 9th Street). The theme is Love Lace — attendees are encouraged to wear lace — at the annual celebration of love and the 13th birthday of Birdie’s. Tickets are $10.
