Barrel 31 will be pouring whiskey in Martini Corner on March 31

The people got champagne at the end of February. And this month, they’re getting whiskey. Lucky people. Barrel 31 (400 East 31st Street), a new whiskey joint opening in the former Velvet Dog space (an anchor of the Martini Corner neighborhood which closed last October), has landed on an opening date. They’ll start slinging “whiskey for the people,” on Monday, March 24. Monday, March 31. [Update: The opening has been pushed back a week because of unforeseen construction issues.]

Right now, they’re working on the bar — which apparently will be leather-wrapped and riveted with 12-gauge shotgun shells. Owner Chris Ridler of Comida Hospitality also owns and operates Sol Cantina and The Drop Bar & Bistro in Martini Corner and is a co-owner of Zocalo Mexican Cuisine and Tequileria on the Plaza.
