5 bowls of soup to help you raise your core temperature, KC

soup-010715Public school is cancelled. Our cars do that thing where they hiccup before the engine catches reluctantly. And the Galactic Empire is forgoing carbonite and just freezing people in the driveway. It’s cold.

The only sensible thing to do in times like these is consume copious amounts of soup. Let us hope that the rest of the city takes a cue from The Corner Restaurant (4059 Broadway) and delivers you bowls of soup that are meant for someone roughly the size of Hagrid. Seriously, you could wear their bowl as a hat when you’re done. In the meantime, here are five bowls of soup around Kansas City to help you raise your core temperature.

5. Chicken noodle soup at Stroud’s Homestyle, like artisan, is a word that is overused. But this is homestyle cooking with fat, soft egg noodles in a rich, salty chicken broth. The Kansas City Star recently broke the news that Independence would be getting some soup and Stroud’s fried chicken with a new restaurant slated to open there this summer.

4. Pho at the Vietnam Cafe (522 Campbell) — The deep bowls hold an ocean of rice noodles in a beef broth. You then get to doctor your soup up with bean sprouts, cilantro, jalapeno peppers, hot sauce, and lime. Add it all and let the warmth slowly spread through your body. Since it’s frigid outside, arrive early (before 11:30 a.m.) or late (after 1 p.m.) for lunch if you want to snag a table without standing by the door looking at the happy diners with naked wanting like a hungry urchin.

3. Chicken Curry Soup at the Le Monde Bakery (308 Armour Road) — A silky coconut curry broth holds tender pieces of chicken breast, carrots, potatoes and onions. With only a handful of tables and counter stools, you’ll be lucky to snag a seat. Let’s hope you do because riding with this soup in your passenger seat on the way back to your desk is culinary torture.

2. French Onion Soup at Beer Kitchen (435 Westport Road) — It’s a take on beer and cheese soup, but you’re not getting a gloppy dense mess of cheddar here. Made with Guinness Stout, this soulful crock of French Onion Soup is topped with melted Gruyere and garlic croutons.

1. Lentil Soup at Aladdin Cafe (3903 Wyoming Road) — Hearty and earthy, the red lentil soup at Aladdin is redolent with saffron, curry and cumin. A few years back, The New York Times discovered the soup, singing its praises in the midst of a lament over the lack of vegan and vegetarian options in the Kansas City area. But that was just an affirmation of what many in Kansas City already knew — Aladdin’s lentil soup could comfortably stake a claim as the best in the city.
